Sources

Every fact on Label Ledger comes from a US federal government record. This page lists each source, how often it is pulled, and when it was last pulled. Every recall page also links directly to the agency record it was built from; the agency record is the authoritative source for current status.

Public-domain basis

The sources below are works of the United States government. Under 17 U.S.C. § 105, copyright protection is not available for any work of the US government, so the records are in the public domain. No licence or fee is required and attribution is not legally required; Label Ledger attributes every source anyway. Statements written by companies and published by an agency (for example, a firm's recall press release) are quoted as public source material and credited to the agency that published them.

Agency attribution

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Recall records and product images are from the CPSC Recall API and cpsc.gov. Product images are copies of images posted by the CPSC; each is credited and linked to its source. Unit counts in CPSC notices are the recalling firm's estimates. CPSC does not endorse Label Ledger.

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Recall and public health alert records and label files are from the FSIS Recall API and fsis.usda.gov. Label files are copies of files posted by FSIS, each credited and linked to its source. Spanish-language records are FSIS's own translations. USDA does not endorse Label Ledger.

openFDA

FDA data has not been added yet. When it is, every page built from openFDA will carry openFDA's disclaimer verbatim, will link to the FDA record for current status, and will not be presented as an alert. openFDA's terms state that its data should not be used to issue alerts to the public or to track the lifecycle of a recall, and that FDA does not update recall status after classification; Label Ledger is built as a reference for that reason.

What is not used

Label Ledger does not ingest retailer, manufacturer or news sites (it links to them), does not use commercial recall data vendors, and does not use lawsuit, settlement or litigation data. Where an agency publishes consumer complaint or incident reports, Label Ledger uses counts only and never publishes individual narratives.
